Baton Rouge - In the spirit of collaboration, the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Links, Inc. and the Southern University System Center for Cultural Heritage and International Programs will hold the first annual Expanding the Visions Conference Especially for African American Students Grades 7-12: Their Parents, Teachers, Counselors and Neighbors (ETV). This one day conference to be held on Saturday April 28, 2007 on the campus of Southern Unversity, is designed to connect students in grades 7-12 with role models from all walks of life for one day of workshops and presentations. Discussions and workshop topics will focus on career options, life skills, (including how to be successful in school), conflict resolution, understanding peer pressure, overcoming the lure of negative choices, and other issues confronting our youth.
Beginning in third grade, these girls receive focused support and caring interaction with chapter members on a regular basis. The results speak for themselves!
The Baton Rouge Chapter turned a fairytale into a teachable moment for a group of Audubon Elementary School girls. Members of the school’s Rosebuds Club, a student club for girls, participated in a mock trial of “The State vs. Jack and the Beanstalk” presided over by Judge Lisa Woodruff-White at The Family Court of East Baton Rouge.
The Baton Rouge Chapter of the Links Incorporated won the 2009 Golden Apple Award from Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) for our work at Capitol Elementary School. In October 2007, the chapter entered into partnership with Eden Park Elementary School and later followed Eden Park students to Capital Elementary for the 2008-2009 school year.

Services to Youth
The Baton Rouge Chapter is committed to providing support, mentoring, educational opportunities, and other services to minority and low income youth in the Baton Rouge area. Our Services to Youth facet has identified and partnered with four schools with a high percentage of minority and low income students.

The percentage of minority students includes all Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian / Pacific Islander students.
The percentage of low income students is determined by the number of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Eligibility for free and reduced-price lunches is determined by students' family income in relation to the federally established poverty level.- Article Count:

National Trends and Services
The National Trends & Services facet focuses on eliminating disparities to reduce barriers to services through leadership, education, and service. The mission of this facet is to empower the membership to effectively empower the various communities served.

Health and Human Services
The Links, Incorporated established the Health and Human Services facet in response to the chronic health disparities that persist in our communities and result in the decreased life expectancy of African-Americans.
The Baton Rouge Chapter and La Capitale Chapter of The Links, Incorporated have teamed up with Mayor Kip Holden's Healthy BR Initiative in an effort to focus attention on solving the problem of childhood obesity.
In Louisiana, 47% of children are considered overweight and at risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure and other diseases later on in life. The partnership will focus on building more ties with local schools to educate children and their parents on the importance of nutrition and physical activity.- Article Count:
