Dr. Elton Harrison

Dr.  Elton C. Harrison is a highly respected educator who has impacted the lives of young adult and others throughout the state of Louisiana and beyond.  From 1959 to 1989, Dr. Harrison served in numerous university level leadership positions as Vice President and Dean at Southern University in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, and Dillard University, including Vice President of Academic Affairs, Vice President of Administration and Planning, Dean of the University, Dean of Instruction, and Dean of Graduate School.

Dr. Harrison received a Bachelor’s degree from Southern University in 1938, a Masters degree from Fisk University in 1939, and a Doctoral degree from Ohio State University in 1948.  Dr. Harrison did his post- doctorial study in Labor Relations, at Cornell University in 1955 and graduated from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management in the summer of 1971.

The leadership of Dr. Harrison in academic and faculty development led to the accreditation of multiple colleges and schools at Southern University, including in the areas of Law, Engineering, Architecture, Music, Art and Chemistry.  Dr. Harrison also initiated the establishment of the College of Engineering and the Graduate Studies Program, among others programs at Southern University during his leadership.

Dr. Harrison has received numerous grants and fellowships including the Ford Foundation Fellowship to study at Harvard University. Dr. Harrison has also received numerous awards and honors, including receiving the Outstanding Education Award (Alpha Psi Award) from Southern University, being honored by WAFB with the Volunteer Baton Rouge award and by the dedication of the Elton C. Harrison Main Street at Southern University.   

Dr. Harrison has actively served as a member and in leadership positions in numerous organizations including the Council for A Better Louisiana, American Red Cross, Kiwanis International, Southern University Board of Supervisors, Council of the Boy Scouts of Louisiana, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and many others.  

Although retired he is constantly sought for professional advice and remains active in community activities and organizations. Dr. Harrison’s local and international travels have afforded him with an extensive collection of art, which is being prepared for eventual donation to the Southern University Museum of Art.
