Dr. Raymond Lockett

Dr. Raymond Lockett earned a B.A. in Secondary Education/ Social Studies, a M.Ed. in Social Studies, and a M.A. in Social Science/ Black Studies from Southern University at Baton Rouge. He also earned an Ed.S. in Urban School Administration as well as an Ed.D. in Administration and Supervision from the University of Colorado. He has presented at numerous Black conferences and has authored eight publications concerning African and Black American issues.

Dr. Lockett has a distinguished tenure as an administrator and faculty member at Southern University at Baton Rouge spanning 35 years where he currently serves as Chairman of the Department of History. He began his career as an elementary school principal before serving his country as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive and Officer Assistant Battalion Adjutant. His desire to educate others took him to Franklin, LA; Denver, CO; Boulder CO; and Manhattan, KS.

Dr. Lockett has logged thousands of miles as an international traveler having extensively visited Africa, South America and Europe out of his passion for Black Studies.  His many publications include “Louisiana’s Future Who’s Responsibility”; “The Black Family: Myths and Realities”; and “The Invisible Americans:  A Resource Guide for the Study of Ethnicity.”  He has devoted countless hours serving as Chairman of Thesis Committees and advisor to graduate students.

Among the many honors he has received, Dr. Lockett has been recognized as a Recipient of Southern University Black Studies Fellowship, the Urban School Administration Fellowship for the University of Colorado, a Phelps-Stokes Caribbean Scholar, a Phelps-Stokes West African Ethnic Heritage Program, a recipient of a grant from New Orleans Consortium for International Studies for the Study of Government and Culture in Jamaica and Trinidad, the Southern Conference of Afro-American Studies Number 1 Member and President of Southern Conference of Afro-American Studies.

Dr. Lockett and his wife, Alene, have two daughters, one granddaughter and are expecting a second grandchild soon.
